PRK Diary — Snowboarding

Went up to Kirkwood to join some friends on the slopes.  Long drive, not a lot of sleep, and the air is incredibly dry.  The first day seemed to go okay — i made a mistake and didn’t bring enough Refresh Plus capsules.  i’ve been trying to go through one a day, but i only brought two.  It’s so dry, i want to go through a capsule an hour.

As a result, possibly due to the winning combination of

Altitude + Dry air + Intense sunshine + Not enough sleep

Combined to make my eyes pretty painfully red.  i’m trying to close them during the evening, and took an ibuprofen earlier.

All that said, it’s AMAZING to be boarding without fogging up my glasses and having trouble seeing as they’re crammed in under the goggles and jiggling around.  Doing some great runs, and having a blast.

Worth it.

PRK Diary — Waking up

It’s been a few weeks now, and vision has been improving fairly steadily.  Switched from the Predforte drops to Fluoromethalone, and no longer with the Vigamox.  The daily ritual is a bit easier — thanks in part to the pet name for Fluoromethalone being FML.  That’s good for a pretty consistent quality giggle, no matter how old it gets.

Anyway, this post is about how awesome it is to wake up and see my ceiling.  Not just ‘Oh, hey, look at that swatch of color’ but actual texture.  The mottles in the paint, the crown moulding… it’s awesome!

PRK Diary – Laser Eye Surgery – Through the first weekend

These were written afterwards, as most of my vision was pretty blurry for those couple of days.

Day 3 (Sunday):

Woke up feeling… not too bad.  Light sensitivity was gone for the most part, and vision wasn’t terrible.  Chilled out during the day, napped as much as possible, and watched Hulu Plus shows.  Highly recommend ‘The Booth At The End.”  i like that show because they don’t show you anything.  It’s like a radio play or fireside storytelling.  Stuff’s happening, but you don’t see any of it.  Which is perfect for someone who doesn’t want to look at anything.

Day 2 (Saturday): Siri was my best friend. Read out e-mails, gave me some laughs while i tried random shit with her. “Klaatu barada nikto” was the first. “Make me a sandwich” followed. Definition of crazy is asking the same thing and expecting a different response, right?

Morning: The little bits of light coming through the windows were like jail spotlights beaming into my eyes. You have to wear this goofy plastic protection while you’re asleep, by taping it to your face. I taped it to the inside of sleep mask in comfortable positions, and then used one piece of tape for the mask — much more comfortable! Of course, nothing really helped to alleviate the pain. Tried to go back to sleep, but really just sat in the dark for a few hours. Got up and made some food. Mostly in the dark :)

Afternoon: Closed all the blinds in the house, and even that wasn’t quite enough. Tried to watch some TV = pain. Relaxed in the dark. Tried to play some video games = pain. More relaxing in the dark. Pulled a blanket over my head and turned on some podcasts. Tiny Desk Concerts and Science of Cooking. That was pretty awesome for the next few hours. Evening: Realized i could play guitar in the dark, so i did that for the next few hours. Took a bath at some point, after which point L returned home from work and made some dinner. Brushed my hair softly for a bit and helped me relax. Eventually was able to fall asleep. Never used the Vicodin or Sleeping pills; just Tylenol.
